Our First Full Day in Seward, AK

Getting the day started with a run along Resurrection Bay in Seward, AK

One of the things I instantly loved about Seward upon rolling into town was that despite the tourists that come in the summer to experience the fjord cruises and hike the glaciers, it is a real commercial fishing town. Many of the less than 3,000 residents make their living in the fishing industry.

Seward is one of the most beautiful towns I’ve ever seen. It’s a port city set on an inlet on the Kenai Peninsula and is a gateway to the Kenai Fjord National Park. Near the Harding Icefield, the glaciers flow into the coastal fjords. We are surrounded by majestic mountain peaks and ice-blue glacial water. Luckily, no one has asked me to stop saying “this town is amazing” yet.

We spent several hours aboard the Major Marine Tours Spirit of Matushka, a brand new vessel. What a great experience. The weather was iffy but held out for most of our journey.

We were able to see several humpback whales. One slept while cresting over and over around our boat. One whale had a baby calf, who was breaking through the water seconds after its momma.

We cruised past multiple glaciers easily identified on our cloudy day by the crystal blue ice lining the bottom of the packed snow.

Sea lions lined the basalt pillow rocks along the coastline.

We’ve traipsed around this town, taking in the scenery. Coffee shops, art galleries and local eateries lined 4th Avenue. The kids enjoyed climbing the rocks on the water’s edge and practicing their skipping of stones.
